King’s is now inviting applications for one of the Professor Sir Richard Trainor PhD Scholarships in the Department of Informatics at King’s College London. The scholarship will commence from October 2015 onwards and is open to new incoming PhD students only.

Project Description:
This project will develop and explore the use of new statistical machine learning and planning algorithms, passive mechanisms with variable compliance (stiffness and damping) and their application for in efficient energy harvesting. It will investigate ways in which mechanisms similar to the regenerative braking systems in motor cars can be incorporated into more complex articulated structures (such as robotic arms) and how

(i) energy flow within the mechanism,

(ii) the response of the system to external perturbations and

(iii) task oriented control of the mechanism impact on the energy that can be recouped from the device.

To achieve this, a series of large scale data sets, gathered duringlong term operation of the device will be gathered, and non-parametric statistical learning approaches will be used to form predictive models of energy flow. The latter will be used to evaluate and automatically derive controllers and learn policies that maximise energy generation, while satisfying
task demands, through model-free reinforcement learning. The outcome will be a device that can self-adapt to maximise energy generation, with impact on energy efficiency in robotic manufacturing, renewable energy generation, and improved safety in restorative braking in cars.
In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), the Department of Informatics was ranked in the country according to the ‘power’ metric, which takes into account both the quality and quantity of research activity. The Department of Informatics is located on the Strand Campus of King’s College London where the studentship will be based.

• Lead Supervisor: Matthew Howard, Lecturer in Informatics (Robotics)
• Second Supervisor: Daniele Magazzeni, Lecturer in Computer Science

Candidate profile:
The successful candidate will hold a relevant degree (Computer Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering) as well as good programming skills and a strong mathematical background. Experience in robotics and/or statistical machine learning is a plus.
She/he must be highly motivated and must have:
– experience in writing scientific reports
– excellent communication skills in English (both writing and speaking)
– good attitude towards team working in an international environment.
