The Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD) awards PhD Scholarships on a topic aligned to HEARDs key areas of strategic focus at University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Scholarship is available for citizens of all African countries. Female candidates and, in the case of South Africa, those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, are especially encouraged to apply. The value of each scholarship is R270, 000 and will be paid in tranches over three years. The application deadline is 1 August 2015.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in any of the following key areas of strategic focus Sexual and Reproductive Health; Health Systems Strengthening and Economics of Critical Enablers in HIV Programming.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for PhD dissertation (full time) at the University of KwaZulu–Natal (UKZN).

Eligibility: Applications are invited from citizens of all African countries. Female candidates and, in the case of South Africa, those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, are especially encouraged to apply.
-Hold a Master’s Degree (first or upper second class pass or its equivalent)
-Have demonstrable research experience or completion of training in research methodologies during undergraduate and post-graduate education
-Undertake to register for a PhD dissertation (full time) at the University of KwaZulu–Natal (UKZN) on a topic aligned to HEARDs key areas of strategic focus
-Meet the requirements for PhD registration at UKZN
-Make a commitment to remain on the African continent for at least TWO years after graduation
-Students who have obtained qualifications from universities outside of South Africa need to show proof of application to obtain South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) certification

Scholarship Open for International Students: Citizens of all African countries (South African students are especially encouraged to apply) are eligible for these PhD scholarships.

Scholarship Description: Under the supervision of Professor Nana Poku and with the generous support of Sida/ NORAD, HEARD is offering up to four full time PhD Research Scholarships in any of the following key areas of strategic focus Sexual and Reproductive Health; Health Systems Strengthening and Economics of Critical Enablers in HIV Programming. Award of the HEARD PhD Research Scholarship is conditional on candidates meeting the requirements for PhD registration at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and on participating in a compulsory training component during the first year of study. The training component will be conducted over four two-week blocks during the first year of study. Candidates will produce a thesis related to one of HEARDs priority research nodes, as detailed above. The Scholarship programme emphasizes the mastery of quantitative and qualitative methods for understanding policy problems and for devising, evaluating and/or implementing policy solutions.

Duration of award(s): Scholarships will be paid in tranches over three years. Tranche payments will be conditional on research progress.

What does it cover? The value of each scholarship is R270, 000.

Selection Criteria: Not Known

Notification: Successful candidates will be based in Durban, South Africa, for the duration of the scholarship, with the exception of the time during which they may undertake field research elsewhere.
