CIMO Postgraduate Research Scholarships For International Students To Study In Any University In Finland

The Centre for International Mobility CIMO awards scholarships for foreign Doctoral level students and young researchers to carry out postgraduate studies and research and teaching in Finnish universities.

Applications are invited for CIMO fellowship programme available for students and researchers from all countries and from all academic fields to pursue doctoral studies at a Finnish university. Visiting Doctoral-level students and researchers who are doing their Doctorate degree at some foreign university can also be considered eligible, provided that the motivation letter of the hosting Finnish university department presents exceptionally good grounds for such an application. The grant is 1,500 euro/month. The grant is personal and is intended to cover for the subsistence costs of the scholarship holder in Finland. Additional support for accommodation will not be paid nor will CIMO pay travel or visa / residence permit expenses. Trips abroad to collect research materials cannot be included in the scholarship period.

‣ Scholarships are mainly targeted at those Doctoral level students who will be doing their whole Doctorate or Double Doctorate at a Finnish university.

Scholarship Duration: The scholarship period may last from 3 to 12 months. The period may be extended only in exceptional cases. Visits shorter than 3 months will not be funded.

Scholarship covers: The grant is 1,500 euro/month. The grant is personal and is intended to cover for the subsistence costs of the scholarship holder in Finland. Additional support for accommodation will not be paid nor will CIMO pay travel or visa / residence permit expenses. Trips abroad to collect research materials cannot be included in the scholarship period.

‣ The scholarship holder cannot receive another full scholarship nor salary with a CIMO grant.

Eligibility

‣ The primary target groups in the CIMO Fellowships programme are such Doctoral level students who will be doing their Doctorate (or Double Doctorate) at a Finnish university.

‣ Visiting Doctoral-level students and researchers who are doing their Doctorate degree at some foreign university can also be considered eligible, provided that the motivation letter of the hosting Finnish university department presents exceptionally good grounds for such an application.

‣ The programme is open for applicants from all countries. However, when decisions on scholarship are made, emphasis is given to applicants from Russia, China, India, Chile, Brazil and North America.

Notification:

‣ Decisions will be made within approximately 3 months after receipt of application.

Scholarship Application Method 

‣ The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with a Finnish host university.

‣ If a Finnish university is willing to host you, then the Finnish university department wishing to host you can apply to CIMO for the grant on your behalf. In other words, only the hosting Finnish university can act as an “applicant” in the CIMO Fellowship programme.

‣ Applications should be submitted on the attached CIMO Fellowships application form, which should be filled in electronically, printed and signed.

‣ Two copies of the application with required attachments should be submitted to CIMO. Please mark the envelope with “CIMO Fellowships”.

‣ The following attachments are required:

  • A motivation letter from the applicant (the hosting university), max 1 page
  • Complete CV of the scholarship candidate
  • Research plan (3-5 pages)

‣ Scholarship Applications Due Date : There are no annual application deadlines in the CIMO Fellowship programme. Applications may be considered at all times. However, please note that applications should be submitted at least 5 months before the intended scholarship period.
