University of Bonn is pleased to offer ZEF’s doctoral studies program in Germany. Young scientists from all over the world are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.
ZEF’s doctoral studies program aims at attracting young scientists from all over the world with an outstanding master’s or equivalent degree in economics, social sciences, sociology, political science, economics, development economics, agricultural and resource economics, agronomy, biology, ecology, forestry, mathematics or earth sciences.
The Center for Development Research (ZEF) is an institute of the University of Bonn, Germany. It started its research activities in 1997. ZEF’s researchers aim to find science-based solutions to development-related issues.
ZEF’s doctoral program is conducted in English. University therefore requires the following English language skills: IELTS (band 6) certificate or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer-based, 80 internet-based). Students can attend a two-month German language course prior to the study program.
Course Level: Scholarship is awarded for pursuing Doctoral degree programme.
Study Subject: Scholarship is available in areas of Economics, Ecology and Social Sciences.
Scholarship Award: ZEF raises no tuition for the doctoral program. However, applicant’s need approximately 900 Euros per month for a decent living in Germany, so adequate research funds totalling 20,000 Euros must be secured.
Independent/own funding : ZEF accepts qualified candidates with funds of their own or stipends from third parties, such as governments or international sponsors. If applicant’s plan to study with own funds or they already have a scholarship,they may submit an application at any time.
Scholarships/stipends: If applicant’s do not have sufficient financial funds of their own or a scholarship already, they have to apply for funds. Options for scholarships depend on their origin, discipline and research area:
Scholarships via ZEF: Candidates from developing countries can apply for a scholarship provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). A number of these DAAD scholarships are sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and available via ZEF. A prerequisite for applying is having at least two years of relevant professional experience. Please submit the application documents no. 1 to 12, except no.11 from the list of required application documents directly to ZEF. Application deadline is August 31, every year, for intake in October of the subsequent year.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this scholarship:
-Academic qualification: an excellent master or equivalent degree: G.P.A. higher than 3.0 in the American system, or a grade higher than 2.0 in the German system or equivalent.
-Innovative research ideas: Applicant’s application must contain a Graduate Research Statement. The statement should describe a development problem they consider interesting and important; include their main research questions and the proposed methods linked to them; and have literature references. The statement should have a maximum of 4 pages. Their Graduate Research Statement may relate to ZEF’s research areas in a broad sense of may address a topic in another development research area. The selection committee will assess all research statements on the basis of orgininality, analytical rigor, and relevance.
-ZEF’s doctoral program is conducted in English. University therefore require the following English language skills: IELTS (band 6) certificate or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer-based, 80 internet-based). Students can attend a two-month German language course prior to the study program.
-There is no age limit for applying to the doctoral program at ZEF. However, their last academic degree should be obtained less than six years ago.
Nationality: Young scientists from all over the world are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.
College Admission Requirement

The name of the PDF-file and the subject of the e-mail should contain their registration number followed by their name (like “123_John Doe”). Funding / scholarship:
. If applicants already have a scholarship, a copy of the letter of award is required.
. In case they do not have a DAAD or external scholarship, they need a proof of sufficient financial resources to fund their study for three years.
. Applicants with a citizenship from a developing country can apply for a DAAD scholarship directly at ZEF: They have to submit a DAAD application form which can be downloaded here or is available at the DAAD home page, the German embassies and DAAD offices worldwide.
-A prerequisite for applying for this DAAD scholarship is having at least two years of relevant professional experience.
-Only applicants, who have not lived in Germany yet or have been a resident in Germany for less than 15 months at the time of application, can apply for this DAAD scholarship.
-Please note, while filling in the form, tick “Scholarship for a postgraduate course with relevance to developing countries”.
-Please make sure that they send only one copy of their application directly to ZEF! It is not necessary to send additional copies to DAAD!
-A convincing and well-plannedGraduate Research Statement which is the most important selection criterion besides previous study achievements
-An abstract of their master’s or diploma thesis
-Copies of all relevant academic certificates with transcripts they obtained (starting with the last degree back to the Secondary school degree).
– All certificates must be accompanied by a German or English translation.
– Students in the final semester of their master’s study are also eligible to apply. In this case, they can submit their degree certificate later. However, we will need transcripts of their study or at least a written proof of the grades of their master’s study. Otherwise university recommend applicants to submit the application one year later.
– They have to show the original certificates at their arrival at ZEF.
-Certified proficiency in English: TOEFL (550 points paper based; 213 computer based-; 79-80 iBT) or IELTS (band 6). This is not necessary for native English speakers or students who have had English as language of instruction at the university they studied at (certified by the university). In exceptional cases, we also accept other certificates of proficiency in English.
-Optional: A successful GRE or GMAT test, (especially for quantitative and analytical abilities) will enhance their chances for being selected.
-Optional:List of publications
-If applicants are employed, university need a statement from their current employer. It will be helpful in their application for a scholarship if their employer is interested in having them pursue this doctoral study and is willing to grant them leave of absence for this purpose.
-A copy of passport.
How to Apply: Applying to the ZEF Doctoral Studies Program involves two steps:
Step 1: Online registration: All the applicants have to register online. During the online registration they will be asked to enter their personal data and information. After they have completed their online registration they will receive a confirmation per e-mail, containing their personal registration number and all further necessary information for their application. Please use this number in any communication with the university.
Step 2: Application for admission: Please note that their online registration helps to accelerate the selection and admission procedure, it is not a substitute for the required documents to be sent by e mail to the program’s office. (docp.zef(at)uni-bonn.de).
