IIASA Postdoctoral Fellowships for International Applicants in Austria, 2017

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) provides full funding for several postdoctoral researchers. These fellowships are open to international scholars to conduct their own research in collaboration with one or more of IIASA’s research programs or special projects.

The Institute’s capacity building activities aim to strengthen the knowledge, abilities, and skills of researchers to conduct systems analysis.

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an international scientific institute that conducts research into the critical issues of global environmental, economic, technological, and social change that institute face in the twenty-first century.

Candidates should have their Ph.D. at the time of taking up the appointment and are expected to have a proven record of research accomplishments, and a solid working knowledge of English.

Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing postdoctoral research program at IIASA.

Study Subject: Scholars are expected to conduct their own research in collaboration with one or more of IIASA’s research programs or special projects.

Scholarship Award: Accepted candidates are offered

  • An allowance for relocation expenses to and from Laxenburg
  • limited support for monthly business travel
  • a scholarship that is internationally competitive (~ 35 000 EUR). It is exempt from taxation in Austria, but subject to the principle of income aggregation.
  • All appointees are eligible for either state or private health insurance.
  • The chance to work in a rich international scientific environment alongside scientists from many different countries and disciplines;
  • The opportunity to gain hands-on experience of real-world problems, rather than conducting purely academic research;
  • Administrative, computer and library support, as well as other research-related resources, are provided by IIASA;
  • Discovering new career prospects as a result of the experience and insights gained at IIASA;
  • Access to contact with IIASA’s worldwide network of collaborators, many of whom have highly successful careers in their own specialized scientific area;
  • Working in the inspiring surroundings of IIASA’s headquarters in the Laxenburg castle (Schloss Laxenburg), close to Vienna, Austria, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.
  • Being part of a vibrant scientific community with the ability to share and discuss research with experts in their field.

Scholarship can be taken in Austria

Eligibility: Candidates should have their Ph.D. at the time of taking up the appointment and are expected to have a proven record of research accomplishments, and a solid working knowledge of English. The typical period for IIASA-funded postdoctoral support is 12–24 months. Preference will be given to applicants who are nationals of countries where IIASA has a National Member Organization and who have held a doctoral degree for less than 5 years at the application deadline.

Nationality: International applicants can apply for these fellowships. Preference will be given to applicants who are nationals of countries where IIASA has a National Member Organization: Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Egypt, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Korea, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine and the USA.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: Candidates should have held their doctoral degree for less than 5 years at the application deadline.

Test Requirement: No

English Language Requirement: Students need to demonstrate that they have a good level of written and spoken English.
