Adrian Research Fellowship in the History of Science Technology & Medicine at Darwin College, 2017

Applications are invited for Adrian Research Fellowship in the History of Science Technology and Medicine at Darwin College. Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply for this fellowship.

The starting stipend for the Adrian Research Fellow with a PhD will be set at not less than Point 27 on the Darwin College Single Salary spine (currently £20,874), subject to an annual cost-of-living uplift and to annual increments (the third year stipend at current rates would be £22,421).

Darwin is a supportive, informal community in which graduate students, researchers and Fellows meet together academically and socially, so as to enrich and enlarge their scholarship and personal experiences, and to form lifelong connections and friendships. Unusually in Cambridge, Darwin has no undergraduate students: our College is informal and inter-disciplinary.

Course Level: Fellowship is available for pursuing Research.

Study Subject: Fellowship is awarded in The History of Science Technology and Medicine.

Scholarship Award: The starting stipend for the Adrian Research Fellow with a PhD will be set at not less than Point 27 on the Darwin College Single Salary spine (currently £20,874), subject to an annual cost-of-living uplift and to annual increments (the third year stipend at current rates would be £22,421). The stipend will be subject to a 10% reduction for any pre-PhD appointee. Membership of the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme is optional. It may be possible to provide limited rented accommodation, subject to availability, for which a charge at normal (subsidised) college rates will be made. A non-pensionable additional allowance of £2,000 per annum (subject to annual review) will be paid to any Adrian Research Fellow not resident in College. In addition, the Adrian Research Fellow will be entitled to dine and lunch free of charge at the normal College table whenever meals are served (up to a limit of seven meals in each week.  Guests, not normally exceeding two in number on any one occasion, may be entertained at lunch or dinner, ten of them free of charge within any quarter (note termly guest nights with a special menu are subject to charge).  An allowance of up to £1,000 a year will be available for receipted travel and research expenses. A further £500 a year available as a subsidy for conferences mounted in the College (paid at the discretion of the Fellowships and Finance Committees).

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for scholarship:

Candidates should be at a relatively early stage in their research careers. The Fellowship is open to men and women from any university, irrespective of age. Candidates should have been awarded the PhD or an equivalently recognised degree, and be able to present to the electors substantial amounts of written work of outstanding quality, published or unpublished. No candidate should have completed in total more than seven years of postgraduate research by 1 October 2017. The function of the Fellowship is to provide a formal, supported starting point for an academic career. Candidates should be engaged in research within the field of The History of Science Technology and Medicine.

Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply for this fellowship.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Candidates should be at a relatively early stage in their research careers.

How to Apply: Applications should be submitted here by 13 November 2016 and must include  (a) curriculum vitae; (b) an account, in not more than 500 words, of the proposed research and the background to it; (c) an assurance that, where necessary, appropriate research arrangements have been made; (d) the names and emails of two referees who will also need to submit a reference online by 13 November 2016, and (e) a list of published or unpublished work that would be available for submission if requested.  Selected candidates may be invited not later than the end of December 2016 to submit copies of written work and may be called for interview on 30 January 2017. Election will be made as soon as possible thereafter.
